Privy Council

The Judicial Committee of the Privy Council is the court of final appeal for the UK overseas territories and Crown dependencies, and for those Commonwealth countries that have retained the appeal to Her Majesty in Council or, in the case of Republics, to the Judicial Committee.

SM&B have more than thirty years' experience of acting as Privy Council Agents, and Razi Mireskandari and Theo Solley have built an unrivalled practice for appeals to the Privy Council with close links to barristers experienced to appear before the Justices of the Supreme Court.

We specialise in both civil and criminal appeals, with unparalleled experience acting for both Appellants and Respondents. Our clients range from Governments, Corporate entities, Charities to Individuals. We act not only in appeals but also applications for Permission to Appeal and cost taxations.

We have acted in many notable cases including the Bermuda Broadcasting Appeal (Appeal No.48 of 2007) in which the freedom of the press won a strong victory in Bermuda (and which is now an authority cited in UK cases) and the appeal of FBO 2000 (Antigua) Limited v. (1) Vere Cornwall Bird Jr (2) Attorney General of Antigua & Barbuda (3) Stanford Development Company (Appeal No.12 of 2008).
