Mediation

Mediation is an informal way of resolving disagreements or disputes in the workplace. It can avoid the need to use more formal or legal procedures. It involves a neutral third person working with those in dispute to help them reach an agreement and is a confidential and voluntary process.

Many kinds of dispute can be mediated if those involved want to find a way forward. It can be used at any stage in a dispute but is most effective before positions become entrenched.

The Acas Code: Disciplinary and Grievance Procedures stresses that employers and employees should always seek to resolve disciplinary and grievance issues in the workplace. Where this is not possible, the use of an independent third party, a mediator, to help resolve the problem should be considered. Experience shows that an external mediator is more often perceived as being totally independent and impartial
