Lucy is a very experienced civil litigator and advocate. She specialises in reputation management and media law, including defamation, publishing, privacy and data rights.
Lucy was called to the Bar in 1992 and joined SM&B in November 2007, having previously practised as a barrister at Doughty Street Chambers. Her experience as Counsel adds a critical dimension to our Dispute Resolution and Litigation and Libel, Privacy and Reputation teams. Lucy conducts her own cases and is able, whenever appropriate, to act as Counsel in Court.
Lucy has been instrumental in a number of high profile SM&B successes. These include EastEnders actor Mohammed George's £75,000 libel damages win against The Sun and Jane Clift v. Slough Borough Council, a libel claim which succeeded in the High Court and Court of Appeal and is now an authority on the application of the defence of qualified privilege to public authorities. Outside of the libel field, Lucy had another substantial trial success in 2011 in a High Court solicitors' negligence claim.
Lucy has been recognised by both Chambers UK and the Legal 500 as a leading lawyer in the defamation field and has been commended as "an incredibly clued-up junior" and "incredibly smart".
